Galata Tower
Situated in the Galata area of Istanbul, Galata Tower is a popular medieval structure that oversees the views of the city. It was constructed by Genoese during the fourteenth century for watchtower purposes.
As an interesting fact, there is a legend that goes by saying Hezarfen Çelebi built an artificial wing in 1632, which was said to be inspired by older scientists like Leonardo da Vinci and works of aerodynamicists. He took off from the top of the Galata Tower and flew across the Bosphorus Straits. He was able to fly three kilometers off and landed at the Asian side. In Turkish folklore, Hezarfen’s adventure is considered one of the earliest attempts of flying and became a symbol for getting out of the box and seeking new possibilities.
Today, it is one of the key tourist attractions, with an observation deck and a coffee shop offering breathtaking views over both the Bosphorus and the Istanbul city skyline.
Due to its architectural beauty and historical value, this tower is an absolute 'must' in this city.
