Basilica Cistern

Basilica Cistern is one of the most interesting ancient sights in Istanbul. This huge underground reservoir was constructed during the sixth century by order of Emperor Justinian I and initially served to supply water to the Great Palace of Constantinople. Known for hundreds of its marble columns, there are two bases with the enigmatic heads of Medusa.

 Today, the Basilica Cistern is one of the most favored tourist spots in Istanbul, offering a special view of Byzantine architecture and engineering.
