Citadel of Ani

A typical specimen of the art and architecture of medieval Armenia would be the Citadel of Ani, situated in the remains of ancient Ani, the site falling within the Republic of Turkey. At the peak of the glory of Ani in the 10th and 11th century, the fortress was perched upon a hill overlooking the Akhurian River was the most strategic defense facility of the region. City defense was a strategic function because of the citadel's location, as it dominates the view to the surroundings.

 Today, it still maintains the historical importance and creative architectural designs of the city Ani.
