Necropolis

Necropolis is defined as a cemetery. It comes from the Greek language where it is known as city of dead. Necropolis is a large burial ground which is often found located outside the settlement area. Among the widest cemeteries in Anatolia is the ‘Hierapolis’ cemetery. It has three division, north, south and west. The north one is the largest one in Hierapolis with more than 1200 graves.

 Furthermore, the available graves in the area of the Hierapolis necropolis were determined in accordance with the social status of the deceased. In this location there are 4 various styles of graves which are attributed to the later Hellenistic, Roman and Eastern Roman Periods. Each tomb contains an inscription pertaining to the name and details of the person who is buried there and involves clubs within the city and the activities of those clubs.
