Taksim Square

One of Istanbul's largest and most lively public squares is Taksim Square, located in the very heart of the city. Taksim Square has its origins deep in history during even the times of the Ottoman Empire. As for the term ‘’Taksim’’, it translates to ‘division’ in Turkish and relates to the square’s function as a watermark division during the Ottoman Empire.

Today, it hosts the social and political life of Istanbul, serving as an area for holding protests, festivals, and cultural events. One of the breathtaking site around it is the Republic Monument, dedicated to the establishment of the Turkish Republic. You can also access Istiklal Street, the busiest road in Istanbul, full of shops, cafes, and historic places from Taksim square.
