The April 23 Earthquake in Turkey

On April 23, 2025, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Sea of Marmara, about 40 miles southwest of Istanbul. It lasted around 13 seconds and was followed by more than 100 aftershocks. The strongest aftershock measured 5.9.

Although there were no major building collapses, at least 236 people were injured. Many of them jumped from windows or balconies in panic. Emergency teams quickly evacuated 12 buildings, and shelters were opened in local mosques and sports halls for those who felt unsafe returning home.

Experts, including geologists from Istanbul University, emphasized that this was not the long-feared "big one" expected along the North Anatolian Fault. However, they advised the public to remain alert and stay prepared for future seismic events. "This quake reminds us that preparedness saves lives," said Dr. Haluk Yilmaz, a senior seismologist.

Is an Earthquake Always Scary? Understanding the Fear and the Facts

When the earth moves, it can be frightening. But earthquakes don’t always mean disaster. In Turkey, a country located on major fault lines, tremors happen often. Most are small and cause no harm. Still, many people feel uneasy. Experts explain that fear is natural, but action is more powerful. Being ready brings peace of mind. Having a plan can help reduce panic.

What Do Experts Say?

Not every tremor is dangerous. Seismologists say that earth’s plates shift daily, and many quakes are not even felt. Dr. Yilmaz explains, “The key is not to fear the quake, but to understand it. Most injuries happen not from buildings collapsing, but from fear-driven actions.”

How to Stay Safe During an Earthquake

Knowing what to do before and during a quake can protect you and your family. Here’s what experts recommend:

1. Find Safe Spots Indoors

  • Hide under a sturdy table or next to a sofa.
  • Stay away from windows or tall furniture.
  • Never use an elevator during shaking.

2. Prepare a “Go Bag”

  • Pack water, snacks, flashlight, first aid and a charger.
  • Include IDs, cash, and important medicines.

3. Plan Ahead with Your Family

  • Choose a meeting point outside.
  • Teach kids what to do. Practice once a month.

4. Follow Reliable Sources

  • Use apps or alerts from AFAD or Kandilli Observatory.
  • Avoid fake news or rumors on social media.

Where Are the Safest Places in a Building?

Experts suggest using the “triangle of life” method — hide next to large furniture, not under it. These spaces may protect you from falling debris. In modern buildings, hallways and reinforced doorways can also be safer. Earthquakes may seem scary. But knowledge makes them less so. Instead of worrying about when the next one will come, focus on being ready.

Take a few minutes today to prepare. Make a bag. Talk with your family. Look around your home and plan your safe zones.
