Ozkonak Underground City
Ozkonak Underground City found in Cappadocia is one of the many amazing underground cities found in the region. Cut out from the volcanic rocks, it has existed since the ancient era and was exploited by early Christians as a sanctuary from their aggressors. It is a multi-level cross-structured city with apartments, storerooms, cooking rooms and even a system for air circulation which was rather unparalleled in engineering at that time.
However, the most impressive feature of Ozkonak Underground City is the distinct defense architecture. The layout consisted of narrow corridors between the rooms, and thick stone doors would isolate some areas if attackers invaded the city. Moreover, the design of the city included holes in the ceilings from which hot oil could be poured outside to invaders, providing an idea of its structure.
